Questions we get asked

Frequently

Is Celiac Disease curable?

Celiac disease may not be curable but the many symptoms you face as a result of being celiac are all curable. Following a gluten free diet is of utmost importance, repairing the damaged gut lining and curing the nutritional deficiencies will help you to lead a healthier life.

Foods that contain gluten

Wheat

  • Barley
  • Rye
  • Triticale — a cross between wheat and rye
  • Oats, in some cases

While oats are naturally gluten-free, they may be contaminated during production with wheat, barley or rye. Oats and oat products labeled gluten-free have not been cross-contaminated. Some people with celiac disease, however, cannot tolerate the gluten-free-labeled oats.

Wheat terms to know

There are different varieties of wheat, all of which contain wheat gluten:

  • Durum
  • Einkorn
  • Emmer
  • Kamut
  • Spelt

Wheat flours have different names based on how the wheat is milled or the flour is processed. All of the following flours have gluten:

  • Enriched flour with added vitamins and minerals
  • Farina, milled wheat usually used in hot cereals
  • Graham flour, a course whole-wheat flour
  • Self-rising flour, also called phosphate flour
  • Semolina, the part of milled wheat used in pasta and couscous
If i am diagnosed with celiac do i need to go lactose free as well

Lactose intolerance is when someone has difficulty absorbing and digesting lactose, a type of sugar found in milk.

Lactose intolerance is associated with undiagnosed celiac disease and is usually temporary. Most people with celiac disease do not have a problem with lactose intolerance once they have been following the gluten free diet for some time.

Symptoms of lactose intolerance are similar to that of coeliac disease and can include:

  • Nausea
  • Bloating
  • Stomach pain and/or cramps
  • Diarrhea

Lactose is a sugar found in milk from humans, cows, sheep and goats. Cheese contains lactose but at a very low level.

Can I take probiotics randomly?

No, you should not take probiotics especially incase of SIBO and SIFO – which damage your intestinal gut lining by feeding on the probiotics further damaging the gut microflora. Therefore we recommend you to take probiotics under guidance of a functional medicine doctor , health coach or nturitionist. Reading the  label and understanding the type of probiotic consumed is essential.

What is autoimmunity?

An autoimmune disease is the result of the immune system accidentally attacking your body instead of protecting it. Potential triggers which affect autoimmunity are our modern day diet, gluten, chronic stress and hormone imbalance, imbalance of good bacteria in your gut, toxins and infections. There are over 100 known autoimmune diseases. Common ones include lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis and many more

Difference between celiac disease and gluten sensitivity?
Celiac Disease Gluten Sensitivity
Genetic autoimmune disease Cause Some research shows that people may not be sensitive to gluten, but to a certain carbohydrate found in many foods. Their bodies don’t absorb the carbohydrate as they should. It stays in their guts and ferments, causing sickness.

Other research suggests that wheat might affect the lining of some people’s digestive tracts. This lining usually keeps bacteria from leaking out of your intestines. But in people with a gluten intolerance, the lining may not work as it should, allowing bacteria into their blood or liver and causing inflammation.- as stated by cleveland clinic.

GI symptoms include:

Many naturally gluten-free foods can be a part of a healthy diet:

  • Fruits and vegetables

Will I ever be able to eat wheat or gluten?

The underlying cause would determine if you can have gluten as a part of your diet or not. If you are diagnosed with autoimmune disease like celiac disease then your body will not be able to digest wheat or gluten.
